Wild nature and nature positive approach

Cop15 in Montreal held in 2022 made clear that bending the curve on biodiversity loss must be a prior aim for the next years. The goal is to have more nature in the world in the next decade than there is today and then to reach full ecosystem recovery by 2050. Nature must recover, so that thriving ecosystems and nature-based solutions continue to support future generations and the diversity of life.

According to a study carried out by the University of Cambridge, “nature-positive” is the term used to describe a world where nature is being restored and is regenerating rather than declining. Yet, most of the time, it is difficult to define what the “nature positive” phrase is. More than 10 organisations described this buzz phrase in different ways, but always using recurrent elements, such as the reduction of biodiversity loss and nature recovery and generation. They all agreed that citizens should take action to make this aim reality. Participants of the Cop15 and many organisations came up with a new idea of garden. This kind of garden must leave room for wildlife, and it should not be protected from animals. In this way, gardeners will let nature take its course and will provide to animals a safe place in a world where many areas have been urbanised and transformed by humans.

For example, gardeners can attract solitary bees by setting up a bee hotel. Solitary bees don’t live in hives, but instead they nest in nature’s hollows, holes and cracks. Plus, it would be very helpful for the environment to create bug hotels. Generally, bugs are not appreciated, but they constitute an essential part of every good sustainable garden. Last but not least, gardeners should include a pond or a birdbath. In fact, a source of water in a garden is an excellent way to attract all kinds of wildlife.

In particular, bees are very important when it comes to build an environmentally friendly garden, and people should do everything to help bees survive. In order to do so, the garden must have lots of bee friendly flowers rich in pollen and nectar. Also, creating a bee-bath could also be a great idea, so that bees can have access to fresh and clean water.

In conclusion, these are just a few suggestions that experts made on how to apply the nature positive approach and make sure that wild nature is taken into account for a better environmentally friendly world. To make this happen, government and financial institutions must act urgently and commit on a new model based on regeneration and circularity not extraction and pollution.
