Beekeeping is currently experiencing a serious crisis that threatens not only the survival of bees, but also our ecosystem and biodiversity. The causes of this situation are many: intensive use of pesticides, climate change, loss of natural habitats, and diseases affecting bee colonies. These factors have led to a dramatic decline in the bee population, with devastating consequences for agriculture and global food productivity. In fact, bees are responsible for about one-third of the food we consume, pollinating critically important plants and flowers.
Due to prolonged droughts and sudden frosts, 2024 is confirmed to be a disastrous year for Italian beekeeping, jeopardizing the very survival of the sector. The severe crisis, already felt in 2023 with an unprecedented production collapse, has worsened further, forcing beekeepers to take desperate measures to save their bees. Crop failures and extreme weather events have pushed the sector to the brink.
In this context, it is crucial to take action and support beekeepers, the janitors of these extraordinary creatures. How can we make a difference? One significant action is the adoption of beehives, an initiative promoted by our start-up Beeing. This project offers an opportunity not only to directly help beekeepers, but also to make every citizen a participant in the preservation of bees and biodiversity.
Distance beehive adoption: how does it work?
Adopting a hive means carrying out sustainable economic support for beekeepers, who face increasing difficulties in their business every day. By choosing to adopt a hive, participants contribute to the maintenance and care of bee colonies, thus ensuring a healthy and fertile environment for their growth. In addition, adoption offers the opportunity to receive hive products, such as honey, wax and propolis, directly from our beekeepers.
When a business, school, or individual citizen decides to adopt a hive, it not only helps fund beekeeping, but also becomes part of an educational and outreach project. “Adoptive parents” can also be involved in guided apiary tours, where they learn not only about the beauty of the world of bees, but also about the importance of their preservation.
What are other concrete actions to support beekeepers?
In addition to adopting hives, there are other actions we can take to support beekeepers and ensure a better future for bees:
- Responsible consumption: choosing local and organic products reduces the demand for industrial products that may contain pesticides harmful to bees ;
- Support local initiatives: participate in events and demonstrations organized to protect bees and pollinators ;
- Education and outreach: informing friends and family about the importance of bees and promoting biodiversity conservation is essential to create a network of support ;
- Contact your political representatives: express your concern about the situation of beekeeping and call for measures to support the sector ;
- Create favorable habitats: planting flowers and native plants in your gardens, avoiding the use of pesticides, and creating green spaces can provide a welcoming environment for bees ;
- Economic support: donate to associations working to protect bees and beekeepers such as Apincittá
It is clear that the beekeeping crisis requires a collective effort. By adopting hives and other initiatives, we can help counter this crisis and support those who work tirelessly to preserve bees and our ecosystem. Every small gesture counts, and together we can create a more sustainable and thriving future for bees and all life on Earth.
